The Langan Band + support

Sad House Daddy & Starry Starry Nights present their first event at the stunning Chats Palace in Hackney. Two of the finest folk bands around come together for this special show in one of London's most beautiful venues!

THE LANGAN BAND
Glasgow power-trio the The Langan Band have travelled a long way since winning a Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections 2008, not least musically, with their brilliantly tempestuous sound encompassing “a veritable United Nations of musical influences” (Folk Radio UK) with a deceptively stripped down line-up of vocals, guitar, fiddle, bass and percussion. They released their debut album, "Bones Of Contention", to ecstatic reviews in 2013, followed up two years later with the double disc "I’m Alive/Live At The Globe". High energy, unhinged and musically extravagant, the trio take traditional acoustic idioms and deliver them with punk abandonment and virtuosic flare. Wrapping pan european traditional acoustic music with infectious grooves, epic, pounding, singalong anthems and intricately arranged instrumentals, theirs is a unique sound emerging from Celtic, Gypsy Swing, Balkan and Flamenco, as well as drawing from classical, metal and electronic dance music. Challenging the limitations of what people might expect acoustic instruments to sound like, the use of bowed harmonics between fiddle and bass can be as menacing and eerie as it can be psychedelic and mesmerising. Percussion is provided by front man John Langan; while singing and driving the rhythm guitar, he somehow co-ordinates the operating of a cajon and a tambourine with his feet to create an impressively tight band sound with a tempo that is free to go anywhere. Add scorching hot fiddle lines from Alastair Caplin and tub-thumping double bass grooves by Dave Tunstall and if the results don't have you dancing like a professional ostrich then you get a refund!

"Astonishing work, boundlessly inventive... driving rhythms and mesmerising folk melodies'" – R2 Magazine

"Extraordinary stylistic dexterity…uncategorisable and irresistible” – Acoustic Magazine

"Exquisite, passionate playing" – The Scotsman

"Extraordinary" – The Times

WHISKEY MOON FACE
Whiskey Moon Face are an alternative folk trio based around double bass, accordion and clarinet, led by the stunning vocals and hallucinatory lyrics of singer, songwriter and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Louisa Jones. Accompanied by Ewan Bleach on clarinet and saxophone and Dakota Jim on double bass and accordion, together they combine elements of Eastern European traditional and klezmer music, old-time New Orleans jazz and the chamber folk styles of Sufjan Stevens and Beirut with their own unique take on contemporary folk music to make for a superbly realised, truly beautiful, and wonderfully entertaining sound. They have released two albums, "One Blinding Dusky Dusk" (2014) and "Formless Forms" (2018).
